of an architectural engineering treatise dealing with the raising and transporta-
tion of building materials. The author was a Roman carpenter who pioneered the innovative
use of scaffolding, most notably for repairs to the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica carried out in
1743-44. The plates include 13 derived from illustrations in the 1590 book on transporting
the Vatican obelisk by Domenico Fontana, whose methods influenced Zabaglia. Millard IV,
