of a posthumously published attempt to document extant medieval Scottish
charters and seals. The plates depict documents, manuscript abbreviations and contractions, and
gold and silver coins and medallions. Anderson (1662-1728) was an antiquary who pioneered
the application of paleography and diplomatics to the study of Scottish history.
