NAPOLEON. Autograph Endorsement Signed, “accorde / Np,” on a letter to
him from his Minister of War, the Duke of Feltre. The letter, in French, conveying a
request from the Inspector General of Schools and the students of two Imperial schools
concerning the selection of men for the cavalry. Additionally signed by the Duke of Feltre.
1 page, 4to, “Rapport A Sa Majesté l’Empereur et Roi” stationery; remnants of prior
mounting verso at upper corners and bottom edge. [Paris], 7 March 1813
[1,000/2,000]
French public opinion had turned against Napoleon’s deadly wars in Europe by 1813, when
thousands of deserters evaded conscription. Perhaps this letter is part of Napoleon’s effort to pre-
pare for the Battle of Lützen on May 2, a battle from which the enemy easily retreated because
of the French lack of cavalry.

BERTHIER, ALEXANDRE; PRINCE DE WAGRAM. Autograph Note
Signed, “Alex. Berthier,” to an unnamed agent of the Ministry of Foreign Relations, in
French, written on the same sheet as the agent’s note to him concerning the application of
a law instituted by the Directory requiring payment of debts and advising that it be applied
especially to the Army’s political foes: “. . . A high price for the cause of liberty. Either a
valuable title, or the proximity of Gen. Brune, will surely placate him . . . .” 1
