(BINDING.)
John Mytton, “The Meet” with Lord Derby’s Stag Hounds:
“A Wonder Whether He is a Good Timber-Jumper!”
[painting title]. Hand-painted
vellum binding depicting English sporting and hunt scenes on covers and two vignettes on
spine between hand-calligraphed titles. Volume used for binding is Pliny the Younger.
Panegyricus Liber Trajano Dictus.
8vo, vellum, worm-holed; book splayed open in
custom felt-lined case with faux-leather stamped covers with metal cornerpieces (one
lacking) and clasp, worn. Provenance: Lowther Castle Copy, with book label.
Leiden: Officina Hackiana, 1675; [binding, England, circa 1840]
[500/750]
A penciled note on the front endpaper states “Halifax binding,” most likely by an early owner,
as it is in the style of Edwards of Halifax and Sons painted vellum bindings but is executed in
a different style. Still a very charming work.
