EARLY NAACP POSTER
204
(CIVIL RIGHTS.)
NAACP.
For the Good of
America. Do you know that
the United States is the Only
Land on Earth where Human
Beings are Burned at the
Stake?
Broadside poster, 15-
1/4x10-7/8 inches; paper toned
with some splotching to the upper
left corner from early dampness.
NewYork City,
1922
[1,000/1,500]
A rare anti-lynching poster from the
NAACP’s campaign to get legislation
passed to make the practice illegal.
Astonishingly enough it was not on the
books as a crime. This poster asks the
question “Is Rape the ‘Cause’ of
Lynching?” Of the 3436 people
lynched in the United States between
1889 and 1920, only 571, or less
than 17% were ever even accused of
rape.A very powerful broadside.

BOIS, W.E.B., Editor.
The Crisis for
Sept., 1926.
Point-of-purchase sign, 17 x
9-3/4 inches with photographic illustration
of the Empire State Federation in
Convention at Mount Olivet Baptist
Church in New York’s Harlem; archival
paper repair to reverse, a few faint creases
where folded.
NewYork: NAACP, 1926
[400/600]
An uncommon survival, this sign was meant to
be hung at a newsstand or some place where
Crisis Magazine would be sold. At the top is
“Please Post,” and “Additional Copies Sent on
Request.” Crisis, the official arm of the NAACP
began publication in 1910.
