EdwardWilmot Blyden (1832-1912), scholar, writer, diplomat and
politician, was born to Igbo, Nigerian slave parents in the Virgin Islands. Blyden’s early
education was guided by Reverend John P. Knox, a local minister.At 18, Blyden traveled to
the U.S. to attend Rutgers. However, when they saw him, he was refused entry—and twice
again at two other institutions. Blyden instead traveled to Liberia, where he completed his
studies and married. He is considered one of the earliest advocates of Pan-Africanism.

Zachary A. Abendong, who had recently graduated from college, was the youngest Secretary
General of the KNDP (Cameroun National Democratic Party) party of West Cameroon
following its independence from France. In 1963 the political turbulence following
independence, he was assassinated before he could take office.
