Maria L. Kirk was a prolific children’s book illustrator and a gifted watercolorist. She studied
at the Philadelphia School of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She
illustrated the first American edition ofThe Secret Garden as well as popular editions of Heidi,
Alice inWonderland and The Princess and the Goblin.
