TWO IMAGES FROM THE OPENING OF STUART LITTLE
.
Williams’s first image is of the family with
the parents, the boy George, and cat Snowball lovingly looking down at Stuart sleeping in his tiny bed.
Williams’s commented in pencil in the lower corner “Cat not good? Don’t like boy’s face?”The second
drawing is the same scene, but just of the parents, drawn much older, without the boy and cat.The comment
on the separate sheet states “Style N
2 lighter drawing and people more comic.” Stuart Little wasWhite’s
first book; for it, along with Charlotte’sWeb, he won the Laura IngallsWilder medal in 1970.
