At the top, two well-armed miners look at the assayer with anticipation. The bottom image
shows a miner asleep in the open air by a campfire, clutching a rifle, and dreaming of himself at
the dock, directing laborers carrying sacks of his gold onto a ship. Peters, California in Stone,

Agua Fria was a bustling mining town in Maricopa County; these views show numerous
buildings and a crude hotel, with miners camping or building log cabins in the valley. Agua
Fria is now a ghost town. The first view gives “C. Riehn” as the artist; no other works credited
to this artist are known. Peters, California on Stone, page 138.
