The Stars and Stripes in red, white and blue splendor, and powerful in their simple and bold presentation,
this poster is by some accounts, a forerunner of the series of paintings by Jasper Johns. “The best American
designs utilize the vernacular tradition, the style of the carnival or the parade” (Judd p. 38). This is
