SPOHR, LOUIS. Autograph Letter Signed, to an unnamed recipient (“Dear Sir

and Friend”), in German, praising him for overcoming the obstacles Berlin poses for artists,

expressing gladness that at least some in Berlin appreciate noble things since the public

there lags behind on education, noting that because he has been so busy he completed only

one composition in last 5 months: a Quintet for Strings, referring to his recent published

works including a Double Quartet and

Die Weihe der Töne

[Symphony No. 4 in F Major],

explaining that he is trying to build one of the greatest opera companies in Germany, not-

ing that the new cast has brought recognition to his

Alchymist

, and closing with remarks on

his new and projected operatic works. 4 pages, 4to, written on a single folded sheet; evenly

toned, folds. (MRS)

Kassel, 3 March 1834

[600/900]

. . . My Alchymist, which previously was less well received than the earlier operas, given the

inadequate cast at the Hoftheater at the time, has with the new cast become an audience favorite

and thus justified my partiality toward it. . . .”
