[California, circa 1930s] [1,000/1,500] Clinton Churchill Clarke (1873-1957) of Pasadena was the first to propose a Pacific Crest Trail in 1932, and was instrumental in its creation. On a signed introductory label, Clarke explained that “these photographs of the Sierra Nevada were taken during seven summers tramping over the mountains, and picture all the characteristic features that make the Sierra famous, including the five great canyons, finest of the high peaks, lakes, waterfalls, forests, and a complete survey of the entire range.”
