Double-sided folding chromolithographed advertising fan on wooden monture with circular scenes of Dieppe, Etretat, Dinard, Le Havre and Mont St. Michel, signed Nerme. Approximately 12 1 / 2 x23 1 / 2 inches overall; minor wear. Paris: Clarey, Lemenil & Nerme, circa 1890 [300/500] 422  c   (FILM.) Storyboard sample advertisements for use in silent films. 67 photographs, each 9 x 6 inches, backed with linen as issued; a few moderately faded, but generally minor wear. Np, circa 1922 [400/600] An advertising agency prepared short films to be inserted prior to theater screenings of silent films. The final frame featured a business card for a local business, which could be altered to suit the advertiser. The action on screen is described below each storyboard. For example, one ad shows a baker with the caption “Perfect!”, followed by “Hot rolls”, and a snacking boy captioned “Still warm when you get them.” Here the final card reads “Stettler’s Doughnuts, Rolls, Cakes,” but any local bakery could be substituted for this Indianapolis business. The sample businesses we’ve checked span from New York to the Pacific coast, but all seem to be from circa 1922. Presumably, these photographs could be used by a traveling advertising executive to commission film spot placements across the country.
