This extremely successful sale drew a standing-room only crowd and very strong prices for Hirschfeld's original drawings of stage, screen and television stars.Two highly imaginative drawings surpassed previous auction records for a Hirschfeld drawing: Broadway at Night, pen and ink with blue watercolor and white gouache, 1943, $34,500 (see top illustration); and TV Totem Pole: Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Jackie Gleason, Jack Webb, Groucho Marx, gouache on board, 1954, $32,300 (see second illustration). Other highlights included Diamond Lil (Mae West), pen and ink on board, 1949, $16,100 (see third illustration); Bob Hope, gouache on board, 1957, $17,250 (see fourth illustration); and Self-Portrait in Barber Chair (57th Street Studio), gouache and ink on board, circa 1957, $13,800 (final illustration).
