The September 22 auction of The Work of Al Hirschfeld offered approximately 25 original drawings including a 1973 pen and ink portrait of George Burns with his signature stogie in hand, which sold for $11,500 (see top illustration); a drawing of The Desperate Hours, a Broadway play starring Paul Newman, pen and ink on board, published in the New York Times on February 19, 1955, $9,200 (second illustration); a charming look at Streisand & Matthau, Hello Dolly, pen and ink drawing on board, $9,200 (third illustration); Alan Sherman, pen and ink drawing on board, 1967, $4,800 (fourth illustration); and Henry Fonda in The Grapes of Wrath, pen and ink drawing on board, 1977, $3,910 (see final illustration).
