Swann Galleries’ auction of Vintage Posters on Wednesday, August 5 offered a fine selection of posters promoting warm-weather vacation destinations, a run of posters from the two World Wars, and the largest selection of Mather Works Incentive images ever to come to auction.
Top lots included Art Nouveau works, such as L’Estampe Moderne, with 200 plates by various artists, two volumes, Paris, 1897-99, which brought $21,600 (top); Alphonse Mucha's Monaco-Monte-Carlo, Paris, 1897, which brought $14,400 (second illustration); and Privat Livemont's Absinthe Robette, Brussels, 1896, which brought $12,000 (third illustration). Other highlights were Ferry’s Seeds, group of approx. 23 posters by various artists, which brought $10,800 (fourth illustration); and Karl Koehler and Victor Ancona’s This is the Enemy, New York, 1942, which brought $8,400 (bottom).
