Swann Galleries’ auction of Autographs on Thursday, November 3 contains several fascinating items related to key figures in history. There are autographs by scientists, politicians, writers and artists, as well as a selection of Napoleonic autographs.

The sale contains a run of items related to Albert Einstein, among them a photograph of the physicist and his wife Elsa, signed by both, 1931 (see top image, left); a Signed Photograph of Einstein at a formal affair—wearing a tuxedo—from the same year; and a Typed Letter Signed, in German, offering to recommend a Jewish physicist for a university position, Huntington, NY, 1937.

An exhibition catalogue for Andy Warhol's Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century Signed "Andy," on the cover, and with 10 reproductions, each Signed "Andy" is from a show held at Lowe Art Museum between September 6 and 28, 1980 (second image).

There is a brief Autograph Note Signed by Sigmund Freud, a bill for 23 hours of analysis to one of his last patients on his Prof. Dr. Freud stationery, Vienna, October 1933 (third image).

From the writers section of the sale are a Menu for Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy, Signed and Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway and his wife Mary, 29 March 1954 (fourth image); and a Mark Twain Autograph Quotation Signed on a slip of paper, reading "Truth is the most valuable thing we have. Let us economise it" (final image).
