Swann's stellar, season-opening fine art auction features more than 650 lots of exceptional works by American and European masters, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Joan Miro, Edward Hopper, George Bellows, James A.M. Whistler, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and more. Highlights include:
Picasso prints and drawings that span the artist's lifetime, including Figure Composee I, a lithograph, 1949, shown top left.
Several James A.M. Whistler prints, including The Boy, a 1875-76 drypoint, appearing at auction for the first time.
Pal (Bouteille de basse et verre sur une table), a cubist etching by Georges Braque, 1911.
Amedeo Modigliani's Gaston Longchamp, a pencil drawing, circa 1914, which once belonged to Longchamp, a figure in Paris's art scene in the early 20th century.
M.C. Escher's Ascending and Descending, a lithograph, 1960. The never-ending staircase on the roof of Escher's imaginary building, shown bottom left, is based on a geometric model by the mathematician L.S. Penrose.
