This sale features photographs by Robert Frank, Berenice Abbott, Sally Mann, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, as well as early photographic books and a full set of Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Also on view during the preview for this sale is a selection of photographs being offered at the Aperture Foundation's 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner & Photography Auction on October 23.
Highlights among the photographs being offered in Swann's sale include:
Lewis W. Hine's Spinner, Cotton Mill, Macon, Georgia, 1909, and several other photographs from Hine's documentation of child labor in the early 20th century.
Premier at La Scala, Milan by Alfred Eisenstaedt, a silver print, 1933, printed 1995.
Irving Penn's Cuzco Children (Neg. 260), Cuzco, a silver print, 1948, printed 1949.
A vintage print of Richard Avedon's Bob Dylan, N.Y.C., 1963-65, gifted by Avedon to Bob Cato, director at Columbia Records, Dylan's record label throughout the 1960s.
A Polaroid portrait of Edward M. Kennedy by Andy Warhol is also featured in the sale. The image was the basis for Warhol's 1980 screenprint of Kennedy. Proceeds of the sale will be donated to the Early Use Fund.
