Group of 28 mounted photographs, possibly by George Hetzel, of this mixed-gender art shool in Western Pennsylvania, with studio scenes, views of painters outdoors, and recreational activities.
Albumen prints on 19 mounts, the images measuring 4 1/2x3 1/2 to 4 1/2x7 inches (11.4x8.9 to 11.4x17.8 cm.), and the reverse, the mounts 9x12 inches (22.9x30.5 cm.), each with a handwritten caption, in ink, below the image. Circa 1886

The photographs provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of young art students and the pastoral landscape in which they lived and worked. Apparently, Scalp Level painters shared the same rigorous aesthetic standards as their counterparts in the Hudson River School.
