The Ghoulish Edward Gorey in Swann’s Oct. 14 Auction

Lot 198: First limited edition of Amphigorey, signed and with an original drawing, New York, 1972.

Fans of the delightfully devilish Edward Gorey won’t want to miss the nearly 50 lots of his work in Swann’s October 14 auction of 19th & 20th Century Literature; and Art, Press & Illustrated Books. Perhaps best known for his animated introduction for the PBS television series Mystery!, the sale offers signed editions, illustrations and ephemera related to the artist.

In our sale of American Art last June, a costume design by Gorey for a character in the Broadway production of Dracula sold for $7,800.

Read more about the Gorey lots in this sale, and a couple of exhibitions of his work, in Rebecca Rego Barry’s blog for Fine Books & Collections.
