The selection of Vintage Posters in Swann’s upcoming August 1st sale represents a wide range of images from the late 19th-century through the 1980’s. Perhaps most notable is the huge selection of American posters in this auction, including nearly 180 images form the World Wars, and an unusually large offering of American literary posters.
America Is Ready, 1917, featuring Woodrow Wilson.
Estimate $3,000 to $4,000. At auction August 1.
Many of the war posters were created to rally Americans around the WWI & WWII efforts, and while recruitment posters such James Montgomery Flagg’s iconic I Want You, 1917, feature prominently among these, other designs promote civilian patriotism, conservation of resources on the homefront, or malign America’s enemies. Notable are America Is Ready, 1917, shown above, and Karl Koehler’s This Is the Enemy, a poster designed for the National War Poster Competition in 1942, arranged by the Museum of Modern Art.
Karl Koehler & Victor Ancona, This Is the Enemy, 1942.
Estimate $4,000 to $6,000.
The selection of literary posters boasts more than two dozen of Edward Penfield’s posters of Harper’s magazine covers from the mid-1890’s, as well as posters for publications no longer in business, such as Scribner’s and Lippincott’s. Particularly beautiful among these is Maxfield Parrish’s design for Scribner’s August 1897.
