of one of the major 18th-century architectural pattern books, which went
through at least five American editions and eight London editions.This and Pain’s other works
served as design sources not only for architects and builders but also for cabinet makers and

Small folio, contemporary vellum, heavily darkened, slightly bowed with lower joints start-
ing; first part with toned title-page and creasing to corners, light dampstain to lower outer
corners through F2, otherwise fairly bright and clean; contemporary owner’s signature on
front blank, ex-collection architect Charles Ewing, with his bookplate.

This is technically the fourth edition, with a new typesetting of the 1601 edition, by the same
printer, with different woodcut initials.The plates are worn impressions from the originals of the
1570 edition.They were used for the final time in the French edition of 1650—Fowler 215.
