A VERY EARLY STOCK CERTIFICATE FOR GARVEY
S BLACK STAR LINE
.
The Black Star
Line was to be the U.N.I.A.’s vehicle for promoting worldwide commerce among black
communities. In Garvey’s vision, Black Star Line ships would transport manufactured goods,
raw materials, and produce among black businesses in North America, the Caribbean, and
Africa, and become the linchpin in a global black economy.

The signer of this certificate, vice-president Orlando M.Thompson, was one of Garvey’s right
hand men, and an indicted co-conspirator in the federal case brought against Garvey and the
Black Star Line. In all, Elie Garcia, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, OrlandoThompson, and George
Tobias were accused of “using the United States Post Office to defraud.” The government’s
case was so thin that Garvey was the only one of the four convicted (on only one count) and
he had less to do with the alleged crime than all the rest.
