Inscribed, by archaeologists, historians, and others encountered while traveling around the
world, kept by Mary-Helen Warden, wife of archaeologist Erich F. Schmidt, including
Signatures, Inscriptions, Drawings in ink or graphite, Photographs, Autograph Letters, and
Autograph Musical Quotations. Most written 4-10 items per page, some signatures and let-
ters mounted, over 60 blank pages at end. Several inscriptions in Arabic, Chinese, Tibetan,
Bengali, or other languages. With several unsigned photographs and printed items,
mounted on pages or laid in throughout. 8vo, calf with decorations stamped in gilt on
spine and covers, worn.

Signed, with a 3-line Autograph Postscript,
to furrier Peter Smith, acknowledging receipt
of the package of furs from Mr. [James] Kipp,
remarking that the bear pelts were too thick,
sending a list of pelts received and their val-
ues, promising to advance cash to him,
requesting that he not mention the advance
to the Kanes, and suggesting that he buy any
pelts at good prices and especially muskrat. 3
pages, 4to, with integral address leaf; seal tear
at bottom edge of address leaf with minor

I shall endeavour to furnish you with cash . . . . I
beg you’ll not let the Kanes know any thing ab’
my advancing Cash. I find they are very jealous of
you, and told me they were sure I paid you more
than them. . . .”
