THE COLLECTION OF A VIRGINIA GENTLEMAN
This small but impressive collection of American prints and drawings,
covering highlights from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century,
was amassed by a gentleman who now resides in the Washington DC area.
He came to this country in 1939, escaping Hitler’s worn-torn Germany, and
lived in the New York City suburbs for 35 years. There he discovered and
fell in love with American art, most notably the works of the artists that form
this collection, namely Homer, Hassam, Bellows, Hopper, Lewis, Benton
and others.
Many of these classic works were acquired through auctions and galleries
in New York during the 1970s, 80s and 90s. The instances in which Swann
is the source of the acquisition have been noted in the catalogue text.
This collector is now placing these exquisite prints and drawings up for
auction in preparation for a move to a smaller house. It is his desire to see
them cherished by other collectors, as he has received so much pleasure
from them over the years, and it is his hope and ours that they now may
hold places of honor in other collections.
