An impressive promotional campaign for a nationwide black beauty contest. The 1960’s saw
the beginning of large corporate advertising campaigns aimed specifically at the black community
for the first time. Clarence Holte, a noted African American book collector and “adman” was
hired by BBD&O, one of the largest advertising firms in the world to head up an entire divi-
sion, devoted to “black” advertising. This was one of his campaigns.

Two very handsome 18th century maps, describing the slave coast of Africa. Maps like this were
used by slave traders to identify the safe places along the coast: “drawn very exactly on the Spot
in the Year 1699 by several Pilots Jointly.” Filled with soundings, showing the locations of shoals
and oriented by a compass rose. These accompanied “A Description of the Coasts of North and
South Guinea and of Ethiopic Inferior…” by John Barbot in Vol. V. (London 1744).
