A striking half-profile portrait of W.E.B. Du Bois probably taken between 1940 and 1944,
when it was presented “For George A. Towns and Family 1897-1944.”possibly a reference to
the span of their friendship. George Alexander Towns (1870-1960) was an educator, author,
community leader, and member of Harvard’s class of 1900. He was later affiliated with Atlanta
University, first as a student, then as professor and then as an active alumnus. One of his most
notable contributions was founding the Crimson and Grey, the Atlanta alumni Association’s
monthly newsletter. He was a member of the class of 1894, which also included his friend
James Weldon Johnson, with whom he maintained a lifelong correspondence. He was active in
the Atlanta NAACP, the Citizen’s League, the Boule and Community Chest. His papers
reside at the Robert W. Woodruff Library at Atlanta University, which includes a rich corre-
spondence with Du Bois.
