On the far right, holding the longer rifle, is the Chiricahua Apache leader Goyathlay, better
known by his Mexican nickname Geronimo. The Smithsonian identifies his comrades as his
brother-in-law Yahnozha; son Chappo; and second cousin Fun. The photograph was taken in
the Sierra Madre Mountains during negotiations with General Crook for his surrender. You
may recognize the image from the popular T-shirts captioned “Homeland Security: Fighting
Terrorism Since 1492,” but this is an original print.
