THE THEODORE ROOSEVELT COLLECTION OF PETER SCANLAN
LOTS 325 to 434
Peter Scanlan (1941-2012) began his Theodore Roosevelt collection as a young boy, and
never stopped, through an eventful and colorful life that included stints in the Australian
outback, Spain, Florida, and the Khyber Pass before settling down in the 1970s as a political
items dealer in Albany, NY. He bore a remarkable resemblance to Roosevelt in form and
spirit, was an active member of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, and was a mentor to
countless other Roosevelt collectors and scholars. His Roosevelt collection was wide-ranging,
with a particular emphasis on books and pamphlets by Roosevelt, and also including to a
choice selection of autographs, books about Roosevelt, material relating to the extended
family, and a wide selection of posters, photographs, ephemera, and artifacts, covering the
whole of Roosevelt’s life, from Harvard to his Dakota ranching days to the to the Rough
Riders to his eventful term as president and beyond.
