One page, 8 x 8 inches to sight, on Kansas City Star letterhead, matted and framed with a
period photograph of Roosevelt by Pirie MacDonald. Not examined outside of frame.

A few months after the combat death of his own son Quentin, Roosevelt writes: “My dear Mr.
Merrill, There isn’t anything that I can say that will lighten your sorrow, and there is very little
I can say that will add to your pride. You and I have given of our best, and no matter how our
hearts are wrung we carry our heads high, because of what those we loved dearest did and
because of how they died. With deep sympathy and admiration, faithfully yours, Theodore
Roosevelt.”
Matted with an earlier letter from Roosevelt to Merrill, apparently signed by a secretary: “I
thank you for your message. I hope your gallant boy will come home safely.” Oyster Bay, NY,
