July 1970.” Coates came to prominence in 1929 with the publication of his surrealist novel
The Eater of Darkness, and later worked as a critic for The NewYorker, whereWhite had been
an editor since 1927.White eventually left New York for North Brooklin, Maine. Inscribed
copies of White’s books are scarce; this with an exceptionally fine association. Burke and Howe,
