FOR WILLIAM GLADSTONE
May 18, 1929 – November 7, 2012.
The military section of the present catalogue contains many selections from the
collection of William Gladstone (1929–2012). Gladstone was the preeminent scholar
on the Colored Troops of the American Civil War, the author of
United States
Colored Troops 1863
1867
(Gettysburg, 1990) and
Men of Color
(Gettysburg, 1993).
Both works are considered by many to be the best on the subject.
Bill was known as a collector par excellence of photographs, documents, medals,
sculpture and virtually anything relative to the participation of the African American
in America’s wars, particularly the Civil War. Over the years, collections accumulated
by Bill were acquired by the Library of Congress, Pamplin Historical Park, the
Gettysburg National Military Park, the U.S. Military History Institute, the West Point
Museum and more recently, the Smithsonian. In addition to his two books,
Gladstone contributed scores of articles to numerous publications.
Bill was a good friend with a wonderful sense of humor, a talented whittler and a
living, breathing, storehouse of information, which he was always willing to share.
