Vp, 1840’s to 1880’s
[3,000/5,000]
An attractive and varied group of original engraved or lithographed sheet music by some by the top
composers and performers of the day, covering a span from the 1840’s to the 1880’s. Most have
themes relative to slavery, such as “The Slave Ship” or “Freedom on the Old Plantation.” Many of
these covers are pictorial. Includes songs by Stephen Foster, and African American composer James
Bland. In the latter part of the 19th century most middle income homes had pianos, and songs like
these were immensely popular on both sides of the Mason Dixon Line.
