A wonderful image, showing the Afro-American Orchestra on stage. In the foreground, we see
the backs of a row of seats. We could find nothing about this musical group, other than the like-
lihood that they were from Jacksonville, Florida—based on the photographer’s (Obrien De
Groot) stamp on the reverse. Given the instrumental composition of the group, it is likely that it
was a dance-band.

Erie, Nd, circa 1921-1924

Originally created at the Virginia Minstrels in 1843, the group’s personnel and name changed
over time, and more than a few groups laid claim to the name of Virginal Minstrels. However,
J.W. Johnson’s troupe remained one of, if not the foremost African American minstrel troupe.
The Library of Congress dates this poster at 1921, however a pencil note on this poster says
“Jan. 1924.”.
