A fine image of Theodore “Candy Sam”
Ferris, a famous Yale character. Ferris did some
gardening and odd jobs around the campus, but
was known as “Candy Sam” for the sweets he
sold to students This is the earliest of three
known photographs of the subject taken by
George Kendall Warren, a daguerreotypist and
photographer,

arms.
1/4 plate tintype in a beautiful contemporary gutta-percha and gilt frame with oval
center; some very slight discoloration to the white area of the child’s large gown. (WGC)

Whoever this belonged to must have loved this nursemaid. No expense seems to have been
spared; the frame is one of the most elaborate we have seen.
