The Afro-American was published from 1941 to 1991. These photographs by Wells Rainey
are representative of Newark’s black community from the earliest years. Civic events, local busi-
ness, Jersey Shore, Union pickets, night life etc. Each envelope bears Rainey’s logo of himself
with a Speed Graflex camera. A wonderful cross-section of New Jersey’s vibrant African
American community during WWII and a few years following.
