The Kaaterskill (or Catskill) Clove in the
Catskill Mountains northwest of New
York, was a popular destination for Hudson
River School artists (bothAsher B.Durand
and John Frederick Kensett painted there
in the 1850s). By the late 1860s this
picturesque rock outcropping had also
become a tourist destination for nature-
seekers from NewYork City.
