A trio of elegant daguerreotypes of children.

Comprising 2 delicately-tinted half-plate variant

portraits of a brother and sister, and a quarter-

plate of a child (attributed toWhitehurst) in an

off-the-shoulder dress holding a riding crop; in

contemporary seals and leather cases, separated

at hinges. 1850s

figure, purportedly Capt. George W. Dodge

(1830- ?), master of the whaling bark

Dodge is holding a sextant, with a telescope on

the table adjacent to him; beautifully hand-

tinted; the image measuring 8

According to a contemporary exhibition label on the obverse of the frame, Dodge was formerly an

officer on the whaler

Gay Head,

and later became a businessman in Manchester, New Hampshire.

This image is attributed to Charles Hawes, whose studio was located in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
