216 c EUGÈNE DELACROIX Rencontre de Cavaliers Maures . Etching on Chine appliqué , 1834. 203x271 mm; 8x10 3 / 4 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Edition of approximately only 20-30. A superb impression of this extremely scarce, early etching. This etching, commissioned by Alexandre Decamps for the album Le Musée, Revue du Salon de 1834 , is based on a painting Delacroix exhibited at the Salon in 1834. Only the deluxe edition of the Revue de Salon , approximately 20 to 30 copies, contained one of the original etchings. After the small deluxe edition, the etching was transferred to a lithographic stone ( pierre de report ), with text added, and the lithographic version was included in the regular edition of the Revue de Salon . The text on the lithographic version, which prints within 2 mm of the upper and lower border lines reads: Le Musée / Peint par Eug. Delacroix / transport et lith. Delaunois / Rencontre de Cavaliers Maures / (Tableau refusé au Salon) . Delteil 23.
