Large Photograph Inscribed and Signed,“the Borglums,” to NewYork financierWilliamW. Fuller:“Greetings from our Gods / in the mountains / where they will watch / our passing—and in / time they alone—I fear / will tell what manner of / men we were— / Christmas wishes to you all / from all the Borglums,” a view of Mount Rushmore by Rise, showing his incomplete sculpture with only Washington’s head and that of another begun. Inscribed in the image, lower left. 13x16 1 / 2 inches; mounted, very slight bowing, minor scattered fading to text. Np, circa 1934 [700/1,000] According to the original plan for the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Thomas Jefferson’s head was to appear on Washington’s right. The execution of the original design is evident at the far left of the present photograph, where Jefferson’s forehead and nose are emerging. The stone at this place was later found to be unsuitable, so the work there was demolished and the design altered, resulting in the order we see today. 286
