Lithograph, 24 x 34 inches; several closed tears, the longest 4 inches, some early repairs on verso bleeding through, moderate foxing and toning, vertical fold. Providence, RI: Knowles, Anthony & Co., May 1861 [600/900] A very detailed depiction of Camp Sprague near the Eckington neighborhood in the District of Columbia. It was laid out under the command of Colonel Ambrose Burnside in the opening months of the war. A key shows the barracks of the various companies raised in Providence, Pawtucket, Woonsocket, Westerly, and Newport, laid out with distinctively Providence-inspired street names such as Hope, Prospect, Westminster, and Benefit. An inset depicts soldiers lounging at “Burnside Cottage.” 2 copies in OCLC, and none traced at auction. 68 c   (CIVIL WAR—MICHIGAN.) A Story of the War Entitled Missing after Winchester: A Romance of the City of the Straits. 22 pages. 12mo, original printed wrapper, worn, lacking rear wrapper; corners slightly trimmed, minor wear to contents. Jackson, MI: Daily Citizen Steam Print, 1865 [300/400] “Concerns a soldier’s wife who lives in abject poverty when he is listed among the missing after a Civil War battle”—Beasecker, Michigan in the Novel 1455. The poor widow’s finances are saved by the unexpected gift of a Wheeler & Wilson sewing machine; this may actually be the company’s rather subtle promotional pamphlet. One copy in OCLC at the Library of Michigan, no other examples traced at auction or elsewhere.
