New York: Printed for the publisher [Seth Holderwell], 1827 [6,000/9,000] first edition . A compilation of traditional Cherokee herbal cures for cancer, asthma, sore nipples, cholera, bruised eye, deafness, and a variety of other ailments. This copy is printed from an earlier and completely different setting of type than the copy at the National Library of Medicine. The title page reads the same, except this copy has a notice reading “Copy right secured,” with the verso blank; the library copy has no copyright notice on recto, and a full Tennessee copyright statement on verso. The present copy ends with a 27 May 1827 testimonial from George L. Gates; the library copy replaces Gates with a 5 August testimonial, and a notice that the first 3000 copies were sold out within 20 days. Buckelew, the Indian Captive . . . among the Lipan Indians in the Western Wilds of Frontier Texas. Portrait plate. 112 pages. 8vo, stapled, lacking wrappers; some rust around staples, moderate dampstaining most notably to the plate, final leaf worn without loss of text. Mason, TX: Mason Herald, [1911] [800/1,200] first edition . Describes events on the Texas frontier in 1866. Though often reprinted, we have traced only one other copy of this first edition at auction. Eberstadt offered one in his 1963 catalogue, and noted that it was “printed in an edition thought to have been limited to only 50 copies.” Howes B108 suggests it should have a half-title; OCLC and the Library of Congress copy do not.
