In addition to being a celebrated public auction of 139 works, the exhibition, organized by the art dealer Alexis-Nicolas Perignon, served as a retrospective of the preeminent painter of the French Revolution. Having fallen out of favor when the Bourbons were restored in 1815, Jacques-Louis David exiled himself to Brussels and died there in December of 1825. The preface states that his heirs had refused several private offers for the collection as they wished to make the paintings accessible to all buyers.
