193 193 c   (BUSINESS.) Illustrated business card for Iowa stockyard entrepreneur Bruce Payne, “Dehorning and Branding.” Illustrated with a portrait of Payne on recto and a humorous photograph on verso, 2 x 3 1 / 2 inches, printed on aluminum; minor wear. Sioux City, IA, circa 1900-02 [500/750] Bruce Payne (1849-1917) was a Missouri native who came to Iowa before 1881. The Sioux City directories list him mostly as a stockyard worker from 1890 to 1916, but from 1900 to 1902 he was listed as a dehorner or brander on his own account—likely the period when this card was produced. The 1900 census lists him and his son as the only African Americans in his neighborhood. 194 c   (BUSINESS.) Group of 7 stock certificates and bonds for African-American businesses and organizations.
