Watercolor and acrylic on paper, collaged over board. 590x482 mm; 23 1 / 4 x19 inches. Signed twice, once in collage and again in painted background, lower left. Taped along verso to matte. [4,000/6,000] Carrie was King’s fourth novel but his first to be published, and the one that launched his commercial success. The first edition sold thirteen thousand copies when it was released in 1974, but it was the Signet/New American Library paperback edition with this iconic cover, launched a year later, that sold over a million copies. 116 c RENÉ BULL. Archivally tipped to wooden support within a stepped matte and frame. [800/1,200] Bull was best known for his lush illustrations of fable and fairy tales. The grand, exotic beaded and feathered headdress on this lady is clearly influenced by his illustrations for The Rubáiyát and The Arabian Nights. Bull painted her at a 3 / 4 profile on paper, inlaid to size over a circle of silver metallic paper; the whole laid over burnished vellum, thus enhancing the richness and definition.
