138 c EDWARD GOREY. Riveting Soap Opera. Illustration for TV Guide , published May 10, 1986. Watercolor and ink with collage on paper. 140x10 mm; 5 1 / 2 x5 1 / 4 inches, on 6 3 / 4 x6 1 / 4 -inch sheet. Signed in pencil, lower right margin. Cornered to archival matte and framed to 13 1 / 2 x12 1 / 2 inches. Provenance: Gotham Book Mart to present owner. [3,000/4,000] A somewhat autobiographical image as Gorey was admittedly a great fan of television, especially low-brow dramas and soaps. The voice bubble is a collaged piece, indicating that he reworked the wording until it suited him. 138 139 139 c EDWARD GOREY. Two Russians at Easter Tea. Unpublished illustration, circa 1949-1951. Ink and watercolor with gold. 89x115 mm; 3 1 / 2 x4 1 / 2 inches. Signed with Gorey’s early monogram, lower right corner. Tipped to matte and archivally framed. Provenance: Edward Gorey directly to Gotham Book Mart, to present owner. [4,000/6,000] An early work by Gorey at a time when he was experimenting with more color and the design of what would become his Mr. Earbrass character. In addition to his definitive linework, classic Gorey tropes are evident in the drawing: a samovar, large-headed and bearded men in fur robes, and the examination of curious objects.
