A RECORD-BREAKING SEASON
So far 2012 seems more like pre-recession 2007, with record numbers of people attending our previews,
and record prices achieved for material in all of our sales. The season kicked off with our highest grossing
February poster sale to date, and continued through the month with new auction records set for works by
WilliamT.Williams and KaraWalker (among others) in our African-American Fine Ar t sale, a stellar Private
Press & Illustrated Books sale that sold 98 percent, and top-dollar results for photobooks, photographs and
vernacular albums on February 28.
The March 1 auction of Printed & Manuscript African Americana broke the million-dollar threshold for the
first time in the department’s 17-year history on the heels of great press coverage. Following an exhibition
at IA par tner Ar tcurial in Paris, the Jean-Émile Laboureur : Prints, Paintings & Livres d’Ar tiste section of the
March 8 auction drew much attention, and set a new record for a print by the ar tist, while the rest of the sale,
19th & 20th Century Prints & Drawings, resulted in records for prints by Benton, Munch, Picasso,Whistler
and several others.
