This year’s sale of African Americana covers almost
300 years of history, from slavery and abolition,
through the Civil War, Reconstruction and into
the 20th century. High spots include the earliest
American engraving of a slave ship’s hold, 1789;
a commemorative Prince Hall Masonic medallion,
1807; the earliest appearance of
Uncle Tom’s Cabin
,
serialized in
The National Era
magazine, in 1851-52;
and a copy of John Brown’s
Provisional Constitution for
the People of the United States,
1858, which has not
appeared at auction in the past 30 years.
Other notable highlights include the only known
letter from a black soldier in the Civil War, de-
scribing a battle; a collection of 38 photographs
of Buffalo Soldiers and the Wild West; the origi-
nal manuscript notes for Booker T. Washington’s
Throw Down Your Bucket
speech; and, as always,
numerous engravings, books and prints.
Twentieth-century material includes a collection of
Pullman porter items; an almost complete run of
the
Colored American Magazine
, 1905; 1920s film
posters; a contemporary charcoal portrait of Marcus
Garvey; the rare Harlem Renaissance magazine
Fire
(signed by all contributors); autographed Mar tin
Luther King items; and the earliest known Black
Panther material from Lowndes County, Alabama.
