100 YEARS, 3 PRINTINGS GARCÍA MÁRQUEZ, GABRIEL. Cien Años de Soledad. 8vo, original pictorial wrappers, cocked, scattered light soiling, creasing along joints and edges; internal scattered soiling and creasing, owner's inked initials on title-page. Buenos Aires: Sudamericana, (1967)

  • Notes: first edition of garcía márquez's masterpiece and that which won him the Nobel Prize for Literature. An immediate bestseller that established him as a major contemporary author, this was the work that popularized Latin American literature around the globe.
with--Copies of the second and third printings issued in June and December of the same year. Scattered wear. Buenos Aires: Sudamericana, 1967. Beyond the fact that they prove the work's immediate success, they are notable in that they contain the original cover design intended by the author. To rush the first edition to press, Sudamericana disregarded the image created by the author's friend in Mexico City and instead printed covers bearing an unauthorized image that García Márquez intensely disliked.
